Rumours and leaks have now surfaced months before the upcoming iPhone will be released. A special edition iPhone is rumoured to be released for the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. It is said to be called the ‘iPhone Edition’ or plainly the ‘iPhone 8’. But is it really worth it to buy this new innovative phone?
A new iPhone is released every year, but this year is different. In the past, we had one or two iPhones release, a normal and a plus size phone, but this year it is said that Apple will be releasing three iPhones. iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and the iPhone 8/Edition. The iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will have some minor changes from the iPhone 7, but the main star of this release is the 10th anniversary iPhone. Apple is said to be preparing one of their best innovative phones because of its special occasion being 10 years since the first iPhone was released.

The iPhone Edition or iPhone 8 have a refreshed design. Apple, in the past 3 years has not changed the iPhone’s design dramatically. The iPhone 6, 6s and 7 models have basically had the same design, with the 7 having removed the antenna lines at the back. But overall, that’s it, no other changes. Leaks have said that the iPhone 8 will have designs inspired by the iPhone 4. Images created from this leak show an iPhone 7 and iPhone 4 combined into one phone. It will have the 4’s glass front and back, with the metal edging, but the shape and size of the 7.

Also, the new iPhone will remove the home button. Apple has been hinting its removal with the non-physical home button in the iPhone 7, which uses haptic engines to stimulate the feedback of a normal button. This provides more space for screen, as the home button takes up way too much space at the bottom of the phone for only one button. But the home button is where the Touch-ID is, so how will that work. Patents have shown Apple has developed a way to embed the fingerprint scanner into the display.

It is confirmed that there will be some sort of wireless charging in the new iPhone. Earlier, before Apple joined the Wireless Power Consortium, it was said that Apple was aiming for a long-range wireless charging. Currently, the wireless charging technology that phones use needs to be docked onto some sort of surface, touching, wireless but not ideal. After they joined the consortium, leaks and rumours have said that the regular non-long-range wireless charging will most likely be in the new iPhone. Although it is likely, we hope Apple will come out with the long-range charging.
Also, still no 3.5mm headphone jack.
So is the iPhone Edition/8 worth it? Yes and no. The new innovative phone is a great phone but will cost more. Most of us, especially those who are still in school do not have the money to buy a new phone every year. Most people do, but is it really ideal. Maybe if you are on a plan that lets you change phones every year, but if it doesn’t, then no it isn’t. It is said that the iPhone will cost more than US$1000. That is way too much for an iPhone. Although it is very innovative, will everyone have that much money to just dish out?
In my opinion, you do not need a new up-to-date phone every year. No one will judge you if you don’t have it. Be smart with your money. If you do not need it, don’t buy it. But if you need it, by all means, buy it. Every year, Apple releases a new phone, but every year it is just a slight update. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, there is no need to replace it. Most people have a good working phone, and after one year, that phone will still work. Personally, I still have a perfectly working iPhone 5s, which has no cracks on the front or back of the phone. I have had the phone for a while now, and there really is no need to update it, for now.

Maybe buy a new phone every 2 or 3 years, not every year. Save up for that new phone, and if it isn’t a priority, don’t buy it. Priorities first. Buy what you need. A phone should be secondary. There are plans available to offer a new phone every year if you really want a refreshed upgrade every year. Apple offers one, but it is only available in America.
If there are clear signs that you need an upgrade, like a broken screen, slow running phone or you cannot even update to the newest OS, you should upgrade. If you have the money, buy.
Apple is one of the biggest computing companies in the world, and by the looks of the leaks and rumours, will continue to be one of the biggest. Apple will continue to innovate and reinvent the phone, and people will buy. The iPhone Edition/8 will be one of the greatest phones in 2017, maybe the best, and if that isn’t enough to convince you of buying it, maybe you shouldn’t.
